Lore

龙族 Wolves originated from a hybridisation experiment by the Dragonkin Lacrussa. Frustrated that mammals breed quickly while dragons brood at most a single viable progeny per century, she took dire wolves from a pack that wandered near her laboratory.[1]

Earlier attempts to hybridise dragons with kebbits and chinchompas had failed, but the wolves proved more durable, and Lacrussa became interested in their pack mentality. A rapid hybridisation approach was abandoned because mammals lacked the resilience to survive the process, and the project was redirected into a slow generational breeding programme. By Day 219 of the experiment, gradual viable changes had emerged: patches of scales, improved musculature and reflexes, though never anything approaching the power of a 龙族. By Day 2307 the project was written off as a failure. The remaining 龙族 Wolves were marked for incineration, but Viika 发布 them into Fellhollow instead.[2]

Despite Lacrussa's verdict, 龙族 Wolves are somehow resistant to the cursed nature of Fellhollow.[3] The crafters of Emberwood found a use Lacrussa did not. They valued Dragonwolf hide as durable, hardy and surprisingly flexible, and tanned it into Draconic Leather for outfits that emulated their winged 龙族 overseers.[4]

Journal

The following text is transcribed from the Journal.

The unholy fusion of 龙族 and beast, creations of twisted dragonkin science. These creatures seem somehow resistant to the cursed nature of the region, but they refuse to sit still long enough for anyone to ask them why.

Not that they would answer, they have a wolf's mind, not a dragons.

  1. Journal entry of Laboratory Note, RuneScape: Dragonwilds. "By contrast, the dragons I birth are a slow and laborious effort. Each one must be carefully managed and maintained with focused precision. Even those capable of spawning their own young, do so slowly. Often brooding no more than a single viable progeny in a century of practice... There are a pack of dire wolves that wander near my laboratory, it would be simple enough to procure a few of their number. Some adults, a few children, I'll need a large and diverse sample size for my experiments."
  2. Journal entry of Experiment Log, RuneScape: Dragonwilds. "Yet wolf, there's something here, I can feel it. They're resilient, dangerous and there's something in the pack mentality that fascinates me... I have decided that a rapid hybridisation approach will not work. Mammals, while fast breeders, are weak and lack the resilience needed to survive the experiment if I go too quickly. Instead I shall engineer a slow breeding process, spreading the development out over the generations... The changes are gradual, yet viable. Scales here and there, some improved musculature and reflexes, yet nothing approaching the power of a 龙族... I'd forgotten about this failure of an experiment. The 龙族-wolves have proved inadequate for any useful purpose. I was going to incinerate the remaining members, but Viika in a fit of strangeness 发布 them all."

  4. Journal entry of Dragonwolf Hide, RuneScape: Dragonwilds. "Fortunately, the crafters in Emberwood were not quite so picky. They found that hide to be incredibly durable and hardy, whilst remaining surprisingly flexible. They would craft wonderous outfits from the tanned 皮革, trying to emulate their winged overseers."
